Microsoft Word Citations And Bibliography Greyed Out

Instant Formatting has been switched off for this document.

If you want to keep it switched off, you can format your document in the correct referencing style at any time (which fixes the in-text citations and brings back the bibliography) by clicking on (PC with Word 2003; or a Mac) the Format Bibliography icon, choosing the right style, and clicking on OK; or (PC with Word 2007 or 2010) Update Citations and Bibliography under the EndNote tab.

To turn Instant Formatting back on for the document, click on (PC with Word 2003; or a Mac) the Format Bibliography icon, or (PC with Word 2007 or 2010) the very small Bibliography Preferences icon below Convert Citations and Bibliography. Then click on the Instant Formatting tab. Make sure that the Turn On/ Turn Off button (Enable/ Disable in EndNote X and earlier) says Turn Off (or Disable) so that Instant Formatting is enabled, and click on OK.

To turn Instant Formatting either on or off for all new Word documents, click on Tools in EndNote, then Cite While You Write (CWYW), then CWYW Preferences. If this is greyed out, open a new Word document and click on the Go To EndNote icon. Check or uncheck the box next to Enable Instant Formatting on new Word Documents and click on OK.

I’m Douglas, and I’m a program manager in Office. Last year, we announced the availability of Office Researcher feature for Word for Windows Desktop. Today, we’re excited to bring Researcher to our Mac users, currently available to Insiders FAST users.

Researcher can help you write well-researched papers quickly by helping you find reliable sources, insert high-quality images, cite and create bibliography without leaving Word. We built this feature through a close relationship with the Bing team and are excited to hear what you think about it!

Get a quick overview by watching this video:
